About the Project
This zine was heavily inspired by other cultures and their beliefs. In particular, Animism, or the idea that every object has a spiritual essence embedded within them. While in western culture we often associate materiality with self absorption and shallowness, I think there is incredible value in appreciating and reflecting on the material objects that shape our small portion of the world. Being a very sentimental person, I easily get attached to objects. Not just because they look nice or work well, but because of the associations I make with them. The memories held not solely in the object or in me, but in the relationship between. Objects can help us express who we are, or who we want to be. They can bring us together, or can separate us. They help us function on a daily basis that often goes unnoticed. Through storytelling and introspection we are forced to reflect on the impact material objects have on our lives, good or bad, and allows us to learn about ourself and others.
The goal of the zine overall is to explore our intimate and personal relationships with the material world. I believe that bringing together a collection of personal stories will help to encourage a deeper understanding and appreciation of one another and of the material objects that enrich our everyday lives.
